Doctors weren’t convinced the twins would survive their first 24 hours of life. They told the parents that this first day would be critical and would tell them whether the twins had a good chance of survival or not. On average, one in every 200,000 births results in a set of conjoined twins, and an astonishing 70% of conjoined twins are female. The survival rate for conjoined twins is saddeningly low. According to the National Institute of Health, conjoined twins only have a 7.5% survival rate. Since Kendra and Maliyah shared vital organs, the doctors prepared their parents for the worst. But as the days passed, it became increasingly apparent that these twins were fighting to stay alive.
