South African and American actress and producer Charlize Theron is a powerful figure for mothers. Theron became an American citizen in 2007 while retaining her South African citizenship. As a dual citizen, Theron became a symbol for young women fighting for success in a male-dominated world in both countries. Despite never marrying, Theron was determined to become a mother. She adopted two children in 2012 and 2015. Theron announced in 2019 that Jackson, seven years old at the time, was a transgender girl. Theron said of her children, “They were born who they are and exactly where in the world both of them get to find themselves as they grow up, and who they want to be, is not for me to decide.” She decided to forgo hiring a nanny to maintain a close relationship with her children. Despite a fast-paced career and lack of help from a partner, Theron has succeeded in raising her children without the help of a bunch of nannies.
