Ames is a city with a population under 70,000. It is 30 miles north of Des Moines and part of Story County. It was where they made the first electronic digital computer. Ames is also home to the USDA Agricultural Research Service’s National Animal Disease Center, as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
