Door Drama At Work

I’m relatively new at my job and there are 2 people I answer to. My boss and my manager. I’ve been left here alone for 2 weeks, usually, my lunch takes an hour and my manager stays here and looks after the place and then I get back and he goes on lunch so the place always has someone to man it. While he was on holiday I’d been instructed by my boss to lock both doors into the retail section as we have display stock that could be easily stolen, I explain to him that salesmen use the section to cut through and he said he doesn’t care he doesn’t want anyone in there full stop without me there. So I do that, I lock the doors and leave for lunch.

On my first day doing it I get back from lunch, and the general manager comes storming in in a rage and starts yelling at me asking why I locked that door, I explain that my boss (also his boss) told me that I need to lock it while I’m on lunch. He snaps back at me even more angrily saying that can’t lock that door cause he had to take a client around the outside in the cold (3 times the distance) and it’s not acceptable that he’s not allowed to walk through there just because I’m not there. After this, I calmly explained to him that I’m sorry but if the boss tells me to do something I’m going to listen to him and not the GM. He then looks at me and semi-threateningly says “I’m saying you are not to lock that door from now on. I’ll speak to the boss myself” to which I immediately clapped back “You do that but until I get word from him that you’re allowed in there when I’m not, the door is staying locked” to which he replies with “expect a call from him” as he storms off

About 30 minutes later I get a call from the boss. “[GM] told me he came in and asked about the door being locked and you got a massive attitude with him” to which I replied “No, he came storming in swearing at me yelling so loud the guys in the department overheard it. I told him that if you want it closed I’m going to listen to you and not him. As far as I’m concerned you’re the one who pays my bills”

The boss just laughed and said he was going to cut him a key to be able to get through while the weather is bad so clients don’t have to walk for 3 minutes in the rain but if I come back from lunch and find either door unlocked I need to tell him immediately.

The third day in I found the door unlocked. Told the boss. The manager got his key taken away from him. As far as I’m concerned I win lol.
