38. Zachary Taylor – 139.8
Zachary Taylor assumed the presidency in 1849 as the 12th U.S. president, although his time in office was brief. However, it was his remarkable accomplishments prior to his presidency that left a lasting legacy. Taylor’s role as a general in both the Mexican-American War and the War of 1812 had already elevated him to the status of a folk hero. Sadly, his presidential term was tragically cut short. Less than a year and a half into his tenure, Taylor fell victim to gastrointestinal disease, succumbing to the illness after a five-day battle. While his presidency may have been brief, Taylor’s heroic feats as a military leader endure as a testament to his remarkable character.
