Networking at 30,000 Feet
After visiting family for Thanksgiving a few years ago, I went to the airport for my cross-country flight back home. At the gate, we were told that the flight was oversold and those who chose to take a later flight would get a $300 voucher. I took it and when I got on the next flight a few hours later, I chose an aisle seat and settled in. Moments later a couple with a toddler took the seats next to me.
Shortly after take-off, the toddler threw up all over the couple. While nothing landed on me, the flight attendant was kind enough to move me to business class upfront, so that they could have more room to clean up the mess and the toddler could have his own seat.
In my new seat, I chatted with the guy next to me. He turned out to be a VP of a major company in my industry. A few months later I landed a job in his company. And recently with a bunch of people from this company (the guy from the plane included), we launched a startup.
If I didn’t choose to take the later flight I’d probably be unemployed now as my old company went out of business due to Covid.
