Paul Newman & Robert Redford
Newman and Redford are sometimes referred to as Hollywood’s original bromance, and it’s easy to see why! Their friendship was solidified and brought to the public eye in 1969 when Newman fought to get Redford a part in the hit comedy series Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The pair had a competitive edge that made their friendship appear more similar to a relationship between brothers. The incident where they bought matching silver Porches to race each other up and down the Pacific Coast Highway is one that fans and those close to the actors remember fondly as a defining moment in their friendship. Unfortunately, Newman died from lung cancer in 2008. Following the passing of his best friend, Redford said, “I have lost a real friend. My life — and this country — is better for his being in it.”
