Smiling at Strangers
While some might argue that questioning the politeness of American tourists is even stranger, it is worth pondering: What prompts Americans to smile at strangers with whom they have no prior or future connection?
It doesn’t make sense to most people, and while most Americans would smile back, people from other countries would probably be weirded out by a random person smiling at them. Some individuals may go to the extent of creating distance between themselves and someone offering them a rather unsettling smile.
